books

We design and produce illustrated books for publishing companies and institutions such as Rockport Publishers, McGraw Hill, and the Urban Land Institute. Recent book projects have ranged from arts and crafts titles Paper Puppet Palooza, and Who’s Your Dada, to architectural and urban development books such as Getting Real About Urbanism and Infrastructure 2010.

We manage all aspects of each book's design and production.

magazine designers

Magazine design was our first love. John has art directed several nationally distributed magazines including Running Times, Experience, and the monthly inflight magazine of Continental Airlines.

The studio has designed and art directed alumni magazines for several top educational institutions including Babson College and the University of Northern Colorado.

newsletters

Our newsletter projects run the gamut from a semi-annual four-color, illustrated arts journal that we design and produce for the world renowned MacDowell Colony artists' retreat, to a monthly two-color, data-heavy mutual fund advisory newsletter that we produce for financial publisher InvestorPlace Media.

annual report designers

Annual report design is a natural extension of our editorial design experience, coupled with our financial publishing background. We have designed several President’s Reports for Babson College, as well as annual reports for the MacDowell Colony. We also produce the annual Independent Guide to the Vanguard Funds, a 280 page guidebook chock full of charts, tables, and graphs.

  • The studio also offers graphic design services for a wide-variety of marketing collateral and advertising projects, including brochures, catalogs, media kits and direct-mail marketing. Recent jobs have included law school book catalogs and brochures for Wolters Kluwer; direct-mail materials for Adviser Investments; white papers for Pearson Education, and internal training guides for United Technologies Corporation.

Our work also includes logos and identities for businesses and institutions. We recently developed a school seal prototype for a local public high school, and a logo for a custom framing shop on Boston's famed Newbury Street.

  • web designers
  • Our aim in web design is to utilize our print and editorial sensibilities, coupled with our strong information organization skills, to create dynamic and engaging online environments. Our sites are smart, attractive, and well thought out, but we don't let flashy graphics get in the way of the content.

We recently launched a website for a high-profile political campaign in our home city of Beverly, Massachusetts, as well as sites for a local church, a public elementary school, and an alternative-folk band. We custom design and code most of our web projects with client-friendly CMS's such as Wordpress and Concrete5. When more specific technical expertise is required, we contract with outside programmers and developers.

Going beyond simply designing for the web, John also has a thorough understanding of hyperlocal and social media through his creation and authoring of the blog Save Beverly Schools. Over the past three years, the site has become an invaluable resource for city parents, chronicling the often tumultuous school budget process. The site has even broken news and been used as a source by local newspapers.
